Routerımızda birden çok routing (yönlendirme) protokolü mevcut ise bunların Administrative Distance 'larını bilmemiz gerekmektedir.
Düşük Administrative Distance değerine sahip olan protokol router tarafından tercih edilecektir.

Metrik hesaplaması her protokol için ayrıdır.
Örnek olarak RIP protokolü bir adrese giderken (hop count) geçtiği router sayısına göre, EIGRP veya IGRP ise delay ve bandwith gibi değerlere bakarak metrik hesaplama yapar.
